DWM: But I can’t help noticing you’re sharing a costume. David: “We are, yes.” Ncuti: “Oh yes! Ha ha.” DWM: When it was pitched to you, Ncuti, that you’d be doing your first episode in your underpants, was it an instant yes? You seem very okay with it. Ncuti: “I’m definitely okay with it. [Laughing] You just need to look at my Instagram to see that it’s fine! [Ncuti has been working out, and he isn’t shy about showing off the results on Insta.] I was like, ‘Not a problem here.’ So this is the new look. This is the new costume. But I am thinking, where are they going to put the mic?” Angharad (sound assistant): “I was thinking we could clip it to your boxers, if you’re happy to do that?” Ncuti: “Okay, yes. Yes, yes. [To DWM] No, I thought it was very funny. I think it’s a really funny entrance, and it’s such a huge moment, and [points to David] this Doctor is going through so much in this episode – emotionally, he’s in a really dark place – and then you get this moment of, like, pure wonder and joy. An unprecedented moment.” David: “It’s a very Doctor Who way of doing it. Mixing high drama with –” Ncuti: “– humour.” David: “– something faintly comic. ‘The Doctor saves the universe in his pants’ makes perfect sense.” DWM: To be fair, you spent most of your first episode in pyjamas. David: “In my pyjamas, yes. So there’s a similar vibe, that you can undercut the epic universe-threatening stakes by having someone wearing socks and pants or no shoes.” Ncuti: “That’s the true nature of this show. Silliness and gravitas. Comedy and drama.” David: “It all meets in that intersection. And that’s Doctor Who!”

i think my biggest complaint about the arcane character arcs was the backseating of familial relationships to romantic ones?

maybe it was part of the tragedy of it all but it was hard to care about caitvi/jayvik/timebomb/jaymel when there didn’t seem to be any resolution between any of the familial relationships that to me were the core tensions of the show (obviously the sisters vi & pow, but also vi & jinx & vander, jinx & silco, jinx & isha, even mel and ambessa). i don’t think my qualm was that they didn’t have a happy ending (though that would have been nice), but that it seemed like the relationships were pushed around and broken apart just for the shock of betrayal, then kind of just left there at the end of the show. a strong theme threaded through the show was family love, and it was just left dangling in lieu of satisfying romantic arcs

like, vi and jinx deserved to forgive each other. the constant betrayals undermined the “complicated sisterhood that’s always ultimately there for each other” and i honestly lost track of who did what at the end, or even what their relationship was supposed to mean/show. like you’re telling me “big sister loyal to a fault hothead grudge holding” violet gave up on her sister for some police chief pussy?? side eye to the gods.

speaking of jinx, she didn’t really get a satisfying arc for me, especially given the attention she was given in the plot overall. the aftermath of her relationship with silco was pretty much discarded completely, as was her relationship with vander. let’s not even get into her and vi (fym vi calls her jinx and not powder?? the name she had as her kid sister vs the name of her greatest regrets??). isha was the PERFECT mirror of vi/powder and then. That happens and reduces it all moot.

maybe i’m just biased as someone who’s very close with my sibling & adores a good exploration of complex family dynamics but i do feel like there were better ways to tie off the threads than the way they were handled

my chosen munday post is just sharing games i like, another way to learn about me. it's sort of in semi-order? but is mostly kind of just based on vibes, influences on me as person, etc. rather than any objective measure of quality. i was talking to friends about our top 10 games recently so it made me think about doing this list over again. if anyone is curious, some notes:

jade empire - not a perfect game but i love it. objectively, it's a generic wuxia but it's my first generic wuxia ( as well as my introduction to bioware in general ) so i don't really care! an oldie but a goodie. summah's first rpg ( not counting ffviii b/c while i played it first, i watched my brother play it for years so it wasn't 'new' ).

jsrf is nostalgic. i watched my big bro play over and over again before playing myself. it formed my love of graffiti and street art; its message that art is not a crime has stayed with me to this day. also has a killer ost. HELLO ALLISON.

alan wake ii is art. is it perfect? no but art isn't perfect; it's such a great iteration on every unique and weird idea that remedy has ever tried across all of their games. i'm so happy for sam and team for finally getting the flowers they deserve ( seriously, if you didn't smile at finnish king, sam lake, dancing at TGAs you have no heart! ). also don't ask me what alan wake is about unless you want a crazed essay in your dms, thank you.

max payne 2 - i can already hear that sweet, depressing main theme. another 'watching my brother play and then playing myself' classic. the noir style. the purple prose writing of max... it's just all too immaculate. i'm incredibly excited for the remakes but i'm also sadden that james mccaffrey won't be giving his voice to max again and hope people still seek out the original.

i cheated by adding the reignited trilogy on here ( last time i only had year of the dragon ) but after doing a quick replay of the remaster of 3, it reminded me of how much love and charm was poured into this remaster. it's such a good vibe - headbutting into walls has never felt so right.

yakuza 0 is peak - it's what you should start with when getting into the series. kiwami 2 was on last time but didn't make the cut; it's story is awesome.

p3r is a hard recency bias but! i had p5r on my list last time and i genuinely think 3 is a vasty better game so it felt weird not to replace it.

the only two games on here that i haven't played but i've watched countless playthroughs of: tomb raider 3 and silent hill. tank controls in classic TR destroy me but watching my brother and uncle play and seeing lara get crushed by boulders is a core visual in my memory. with sh1, i'm just a baby and don't play horror games but i enjoy the general weirdness of that game compared to its sequels.

it's just incredible how this man keeps on giving and i'm amazed at how good everything he puts out is!! i've had the gnx album on repeat for the past few days and i still find something new in it every time!!! what i love the most about kendrick is that he's a great lyricist and storyteller and he just proves it again and again! the amount of references and his commentary on certain events, situations and people👀 is spot on, there's no place for bullshit AND everything about this album works so well!! there's not a single skip for me and whenever i'm like "oh i'll just listen to this one song" i end up listening to the whole album anyway alskdhajjdhdjs

God I loved the series but I only wish they had more time! There was a ridiculous amount of ambition just bursting from every seam non-stop and so many potent threads I feel they didn't even have close to enough space to go into.

Like, in the end it kinda felt they wanted to sorta resolve the apparent Wake of Tragedy F&C&S left behind just because they weren't confident in getting anymore seasons to elaborate on that really but honestly I loved the ambiguity and interpretability of the intense and self-contained arcs of the universes in each episodes. It was very well done, maybe more well-done than they had realized!

Anyways the highlight of it all by far the biggest catharsis and vindication in seeing that they did basically smuggle in atleast some kind of closure for where Simon and Betty's story left off. And man... just seeing GolBetty in the horrible void all statuesque in her movements and always grimacing was so painful and fascinating... the animation! (like holy fuck that part where she does whatever the Hell that was to the Lich and simultaneously explaining what those floating shapes are! More or less.) The implications left behind by it all, the strangeness and the ambiguity all lent well with their commitment to the Lovecraftian horror of her new form. It was really amazing actually getting to see GolBetty as her own character now, and I could just go on about that last interaction on so many levels.

I think, above all, the most intriguing thing to me was that it seemed to me at least that she wasn't trying to stop him from wearing the crown because of how hard she tried to undo it, but just to give him a last chance to really understand her and their relationship beforehand at the very least. I guess she did also stop him by seemingly helping out with canonizing Fionna's universe, but just. Damn. Like she really is kinda gone, but still there. She is still her and she knows who she is, unlike Ice King, but she also seems so much more impossibly distant than Simon ever was as Ice King. Like... she truly is kinda beyond comprehension at this point, unfathomably powerful yet you feel so concerned and sad for her, or maybe just who she was. It does seem like she made peace in some kinda way. It just really hurts nonetheless. Also the little Casper and Nova story allegory was so cute and sad :( and seeing Simon posess Shermy was the most bizarrely adorable thing ever.
